THE RED CROSS The Red Cross writing instrument is an exquisite design inspired by the Red Cross Egg of 1915. Czar Nicholas II presented the Red Cross Egg to Dowager Empress Maria Fyodorovna Alexandra in an attempt to stop the suffering and present an image of patriotism. As a concerned involvement she enrolled herself and her older daughters in nurses' training and had the palaces converted into provisional hospitals to care for the increasing numbers of wounded. Peter Carl Faberge was asked to match the somber mood of the nation and reflect on the noble efforts of the family for their dedication and commitment during World War I. Inside the Red Cross Egg are portraits of the Romanov women dressed as Sisters of Mercy Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, the Tsar's sister, Grand Duchess Olga Nicholaievna, his eldest daughter, Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna, Grand Duchess Tatiana Nicholaievna, the Tsar's second daughter, and Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna, the Tsar's first cousin. Our newest fine writing instrument inspiration captures the dazzling guilloche patterns, and is enhanced with the bold ruby enameled Red Cross and 1914 script. This fine writing instrument is meticulously handcrafted from a solid .925 sterling silver rod and engraved to the highest world-class goldsmith standards. Multiple layers of translucent enamel are hard fired to the five guilloche (engraved) patterns adding depth and beauty to the Red Cross design. The Red Cross writing instrument is limited to production of 88 pieces of each color: pearl white and ruby red enamel with a ruby red cross and 22k gold plating; and ruby red and pearl white enamel with a ruby red cross and 22k gold plating. The Red Cross writing instrument is available with an 18k gold medium nib or in a roller ball.
